The Crain Tree Farm & Nursery Difference
LOCALLY GROWN
Our trees are grown right here at our nursery, making them perfectly acclimated to regional weather patterns and adapted to local soil conditions. This local advantage ensures they experience less transplant shock, establish faster, resist local diseases more effectively, and have a significantly higher long-term survival rate in your landscape.
MULTIPLE ROOT PRUNINGS
We perform multiple root prunings before a tree is ready to leave the nursery. This essential practice encourages a dense, compact, and fibrous root ball. The result is a highly resilient product that experiences minimal stress during transplanting and establishes quickly in your yard.
ATTENTION TO THE ROOT FLARE
We are meticulous about maintaining the proper root flare depth (the transition area where the trunk meets the roots) throughout the growing process. We ensure the root flare is not buried, which is critical for the tree’s health. This practice prevents future problems like trunk rot and makes it easier for you to plant the tree at the correct grade for optimal drainage and ventilation.
NORTH SIDE MARKING
To help your tree thrive immediately after planting, we mark the north side of the trunk. The bark on the south or southwest side is more susceptible to sunscald (a form of winter injury) when its orientation is dramatically changed. By replanting the tree with the marked side facing north, you minimize the risk of splitting, cankers, or other damage that can impact the tree's long-term vitality.
